NOTE:  183 courts in total; 161 basic-level courts in the empirical analyses. Courts are organized into groups according to the prefectures to which they belong. The first court in each group is an intermediate court. The name of the Kaifeng County People’s Court (开封县人民法院) changed to the Kaifeng Municipal Xiangfu District People’s Court (开封市祥符区人民法院, 2j) when Kaifeng County was redesignated as Xiangfu District in 2014. Because they are the same court, all cases under the former court name were reassigned to the latter court name in decision-level analyses of court decisions on granting divorce petitions and child custody. They were kept separate in court-level analyses.

In this book it is treated as an urban district. Also, at the end of 2017, the county-level city of Lin’an (临安市, 1n) became a district of Hangzhou.
